OPPOSE TODD BLANCHE FOR ATTORNEY GENERAL

Update (7/20/26): The Senate Judiciary Committee has not yet voted on or approved the appointment of Todd Blanche. According to a committee source, the official vote is expected to take place on July 30, 2026. There is still time for you to use your voice about this nomination, and repeated calls and emails help ensure your representatives know you are committed to your stance and watching what they do.   

UPDATE (7/12/26):  Senate confirmation hearings for Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche are scheduled to take place before the Senate Judiciary Committee on July 15 and 16. The nomination is facing intense scrutiny. More than 1,200 former Department of Justice (DOJ) employees, along with several civil rights and advocacy organizations, have formally urged the Senate to reject Blanche's confirmation. Before the vote goes to the floor, he must pass the Senate Judiciary Committee, where he needs the vote of every single Republican member. UPDATE (6/28/26):  The future of an independent U.S. legal system is being decided right now by the U.S. Senate. Todd Blanche's confirmation hearings are now scheduled for July 15-16. As Trump’s past personal defense lawyer, Todd Blanche cannot be trusted to maintain the Department of Justice's intended independence from Trump’s influence. In his current status as an unconfirmed acting official, he is already unapologetically weaponizing federal law enforcement against Trump’s political foes.

Critics and lawmakers from both sides of the aisle argue that Todd Blanche is inappropriate to serve as U.S. Attorney General because his actions prioritize personal loyalty to Donald Trump over the traditional independence and ethical standards of the Department of Justice (DOJ). Critics contend that his background as Trump’s personal defense attorney has compromised his ability to serve objectively. Without you and others like you speaking out en masses, and doing so now, he is likely to be nominated.

Here are some of the specifics of why we oppose this appointment: 

• Targeting Political Rivals: Critics point to Blanche's role in reviving a federal indictment against former FBI Director James Comey over an allegedly threatening arrangement of seashells as evidence of utilizing the DOJ to carry out political retribution. And in public statements, Blanche has asserted that it is the president's "right" and "duty" to direct criminal investigations into political enemies, alarming legal scholars who favor DOJ independence.

• The "Anti-Weaponization" Slush Fund: Blanche backed a proposed $1.8 billion taxpayer-funded program intended to provide financial payouts to January 6 defendants and other Trump loyalists. This was first an attempt to reward those engaged in an insurrection, some of whom assaulted police. It also sent a clear message that future lawbreaking which supports Trump will be forgiven and rewarded. 

• Refusal to Recuse: Blanche disregarded directives from government ethics lawyers, who advised him to recuse himself from cases involving Trump's personal capacity.

• Epstein Case Mishandling: Blanche oversaw and approved the release of heavily redacted Jeffrey Epstein files which exposed the identities of victims while protecting the names of perpetrators. Jeffrey Epstein victims have faced targeted threats, harassment, and online abuse since their personal details were leaked, and this has made it clear that victims are not safe to speak out
