Demand detainees are treated like people, people who are recognized and protected by our constitution!

In 1982 the Supreme Court ruled illegal aliens are among the “Persons” included in Bill of Rights.* These individuals are intended to enjoy the same rights & protections as citizens including the right to due process and protection from illegal detention, search and seizure and cruel and unusual punishment.** Therefore, this is not “Woke sh*t”, it is the product of our constitution and a central point in our democracy.
It has been documented for years that the conditions in some of these detention facilities are horrible.*** These conditions include inadequate medical care, filthy conditions, harassment and abuse. Conditions have deteriorated further as DHS rounds up individuals and families without having addressed these known issues and the sheer volume of detainees exacerbates all of these injustices.
Detainees are frequently sent to detention facilities far away from where they were detained, at times in different states. This is another form of abuse and it is also psychological warfare. These are not people who have enjoyed due process and been sentenced, they are simply being detained, and this threatens their access to their families and supports, local legal representation, and spiritual care.
Even children are being detained without due process. They are housed inside what is effectively a prison without proper education, medical care, pastoral care or emotional care. Simultaneously they are enduring traumas of detainment, separation from their families, supports and communities and abuses within the walls of these facilities. Recent reports include ones that they are even having their crayons and colored pencils confiscated.†
The number of abuses and tragedies occurring due to this Administration’s crack down on immigration are too many to list. The news is full of these stories. It is our job as concerned citizens to speak out on the behalf of those who cannot and make a simple request, “Treat them like people, people who are recognized and protected by our constitution!”

We need to make it clear we will not stand by and allow any people within our borders to be treated inhumanely and without dignity.
Script to Consider for Calls and Emails:
Hello,
I and other constituents want to ensure that all those detained by ICE and DHS are treated humanely and are treated like “People” recognized and protected by our constitution or released until this can be achieved. See Plyler v. Doe, 1982.
ICE and DHS have trampled on the rights of immigrants, as well as those of Citizens, without apology or restraint. Their reckless disregard for human dignity and human rights is disgusting and cannot be allowed to persist in this great nation.
Conditions detainees experience include inadequate medical care, filthy conditions, harassment and abuse. They are also frequently sent to detention facilities far away from where they were detained, at times in different states.
These people not been tried and sentenced, they are simply being detained. This cruel treatment threatens their access to their families and supports, local legal representation, and spiritual care.
Children are also being detained in prisons without due process, proper education, medical care, pastoral care or emotional care. Simultaneously they endure the traumas of detainment and being separated from their families, supports and communities as well as the human rights abuses within the walls of these facilities.
If you truly believe in the constitution, and represent us and not the administration, you will honor your oath of office and listen to your constituents. I call on you to do everything within your power to help right the wrongs being committed, stop the harms being inflicted and honor our constitution by demanding those detained be treated like “people” who have rights and who deserve to be protected from harm and treated with dignity.
I ask you to respond to this message directly and not with some clipped pre-prepared message and let me know where you stand on this issue.
