Take Big $ Out Of Politics

Every US citizen has a vote, but they also have a method of voting with their dollars and this includes campaign contributions. Unfortunately, our vote doesn’t count for much these days.

Read on or click this link if you are ready to take action: How to Take Action

Citizens United v. FEC (2010) significantly diluted the influence of individual citizens by allowing corporations, unions, and special interests to spend unlimited, often undisclosed ("dark money") to fund and influence elections.

The “We the People Amendment” (H.J.Res.54) proposes Citizens United be reversed through a constitutional amendment. Unfortunately, the same entities unfairly influencing our elections seek to block this legislation. But there is a solution!

An initiative dubbed “The Montana Plan” would create a new Montana law to prohibit corporations — known in law as “artificial persons” — from spending money on political candidates or ballot issues. This is a blueprint every state should follow.

This plan defines “election activity” and “ballot-issue activity”, then revokes all previously granted powers to entities that are not people, regrants to these entities only the rights necessary to conduct business and excludes political spending entirely.

If you do not support super PACs, unions, corporations and well funded individuals contributing to campaigns in a way that dilutes the voices of everyday citizens, please take action now.

How to Take Action

We need to make it clear to our state representatives that we don’t want billionaires, unions, Super PACs, and dark money controlling our elections anymore.

We want our voices to count, and to be recognized as the only “people” with protected rights regarding campaign contributions and the like.

  1. To find the contact information for your state representatives, use the following link: https://www.commoncause.org/find-your-representative/
  2. If you are passionate about this issue, please share a link to this page with friends or on your social media. Our power grows when we unite.
  3. Please consider making multiple calls or sending multiple emails to your congresspeople to drive home the message that you will not stop until they take action.
  4.  The Transparent Election Initiative  seeks to support this effort across states, and your contribution to their efforts is a contribution to reclaiming the power citizens are entitled to over politics. If you can afford a contribution, it may money well spent.

Script to Consider for Calls and Emails:

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [City, State].

Citizens United effectively established personhood and protected speech for corporations, Super PACs, unions and other groups. This has diluted the power of the American people to influence their own elections.

I want you to support adopting legislation that mimics the Montana Plan in our state so that only citizens are recognized as “people” with protected rights in regards to campaign contributions, and all other entities are barred from influencing elections through campaign contributions or the like.

Our federal government has failed us in this regard and so I leave it to you to take action now and restore the power of your citizens to be in control of their own political destiny.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Tips for Effective Calling:

  1. One Issue Per Call: Focus on one topic per call to ensure it is accurately tallied.
  2. Keep it Brief: Staffers are logging, not debating; simply state your name, address, and your position on the issue.
  3. Daily Calls are Okay: It is generally acceptable to call once a day about an active issue or vote.
  4. Use Local Offices if the Washington D.C. Office is Busy: Calls to the local district office are also logged.
  5. If Needed, Use Tools: Platforms like 5Calls.org or local advocacy group guides help identify the best times and numbers to call.
