If you do not support super PACs, unions, corporations and well funded individuals contributing to campaigns in a way that dilutes the voices of everyday citizens, please read on.
A proposed amendment to the constitution, H.J.Res.54, affectionately referred to as the “We the People Amendment”, proposes Citizens United be reversed through a constitutional amendment. This proposed amendment asserts the following:
Section 1 - [Artificial Entities Such as Corporations Do Not Have Constitutional Rights] The rights and privileges protected and extended by the Constitution of the United States are the rights and privileges of natural persons only.
Section 2 - [Money is Not Free Speech]
- Seeks to ensure all citizens, regardless of their economic status, have access to the political process, and that no person gains, as a result of that person's money, substantially more access or ability to influence the election of any candidate for public office or any ballot measure.
- It seeks to require that any permissible contributions and expenditures be publicly disclosed.
- It seeks to establish that contributions influencing elections is not construed as free speech under the First Amendment.
